Nottingham is a city full of surprises

Welcome home

Nottingham is a city in the county of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands area of the UK. It is the UK’s 9th largest city, with a population of about 795,000. The city’s most famous resident was the legendary outlaw, Robin Hood, who was probably a real person. Many streets, buildings, tributes including the market square statue pictured above, and institutions are named after Robin, and there are several Robin Hood festivals and events.

In nearby Sherwood Forest is the Major Oak tree. With a girth of 10 metres, it is England’s largest oak tree and it is said that Robin Hood hid in the tree. Nottingham is the birthplace of two of the UK’s most well known brands, Raleigh bicycles, and Boots the chemist. A local grocer also invented HP Sauce in 1895, named for the Houses of Parliament. An historic Nottingham neighbourhood is the Lace Market, once a major centre for lace making. The area is home to shops and restaurants as well as a 22 seat cinema, one of the world’s smallest. Nottingham has some of England’s oldest pubs, including the Trip to Jerusalem, dating from 1189. In the bar is a model ship, and supposedly anyone who cleans it will die. Nottingham’s famous Goose Fair dates back to the 13th century and is one of the UK’s oldest and largest fairs. Over a million people enjoy the rides, food and sideshows every October.

Nottingham Castle dates from the 17th century and was built on 40 metre high sandstone cliffs. The castle appeared on the logo of Players Cigarettes, once made in Nottingham. The book and film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning were both set in Nottingham, and there are over 100 film versions of the Robin Hood story. There are many caves under Nottingham, mostly man-made. One of the most famous is Mortimer’s Cave, under Nottingham Castle, said to be haunted by local nobleman Roger Mortimer.

Regeneration Plans

Nottingham is embarking on an intense period of economic regeneration, with a £250m redevelopment of the ‘Southern Gateway’ into the city centre underway; encompassing a remodelled shopping complex and new ‘City Hub’ college campus. The £150 million redevelopment of the Broadmarsh shopping centre will create new shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. These will revolutionise the entry into the city from the railway station, an iconic piece of Edwardian Baroque Revival.

Another key development is Guildhall Place. The Guildhall site is unique, with its long history and central location. Up to 300,000 sq ft is available that could see the development of a four-star hotel and Grade A offices, situated in a prime city centre location.

The city is also set to benefit as the HS2 network is constructed, with the East Midlands Hub base planned for Toton, on the outskirts of the city, further reducing journey times to London and bringing the rest of the country closer. Toton Innovation Campus will create around 10,000 new jobs and will sit alongside a new commercial and residential space as identified in the recently launched East Midlands HS2 Growth Strategy.

The East Midlands will be awarded one of eight new Freeports in England, creating an estimated 60,000 new skilled jobs for the region. Based around the East Midlands Airport and Gateway Industrial Cluster (EMAGIC) in North West Leicestershire, Uniper’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station site in Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands Intermodal Park (EMIP) in South Derbyshire, the Freeport will bring significant investment to develop and drive innovation, alternative energy sources and green technology supporting SME’s and large regional employers, including Rolls-Royce, Toyota, and Alstom (formerly Bombardier).
